Reggio di Calabria
Reggio di Calabria is the oldest and largest city in Calabria. Set in the Strait of Messina, Reggio has beaches that stretch out in all directions. Reggio di Calabaria is a survivor, it has endured in the face of invasion and shattering earthquakes. It has played host to numerous peoples, including the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Byzantines and the Moors. This beach resort province used to be the capital of Calabria until it was shifted to Catanzaro. Although no longer Calabria’s capital, Reggio’s scenic location more than makes up for the loss. Its National Museum contains a fascinating collection of ancient art. Reggio is also known for the Bergamot essence (for perfumes) which is produced there.
